Understanding the Decluttering Process

The first step in decluttering your bedroom is to understand why you’re actually doing it.

Decluttering is the process of removing unnecessary items from a space, much like Marie Kondo’s famous phrase “sparking joy” but with less talking to your clothes and more common sense.

Decluttering goes beyond just making your bedroom look tidier, though. It can actually have a significant impact on your mental well-being and overall quality of life. Studies have shown that a cluttered environment can cause stress, anxiety, and even affect sleep patterns.

So, by decluttering your bedroom, you create a more peaceful and relaxing space that promotes better rest and a clearer mind.

As the saying goes, “a messy room equals a messy mind.”  There was a time when I had so much clutter in my bedroom that when I tried to open my closet door, an avalanche of clothes would come tumbling out. Let’s just say it was not good.

But once I managed to declutter the bedroom and simplified my space, I noticed a significant improvement in my mood, productivity and sleep.

The Closet

When it comes to sorting your clothes into keep, donate, and toss piles, it’s time to get real—real funny and real honest.

We’ve all got that jumper with more holes than a cheese grater, and yet, here it is, making a routine escape from the “toss” pile. But now’s time for tough love.

First up, the “keep” pile. Be ruthless but kind. If the clothing item makes you feel like you’re about to strut down a runway, it stays. If it’s been worn within the last season or has sentimental value, it gets a pass. But if those jeans are still hoping to come back into style from the 90s, they probably belong elsewhere.

The “donate” pile is your gift to someone else’s wardrobe. If it’s in good shape but hasn’t seen the light of day in a year, donate! Give to someone you know, or send to your local thrift store. Just think, those disco pants might light up someone else’s life.

Finally, the “toss” pile. This is for those items that are beyond repair or simply lived their life out in your glamorous fashion show of a wardrobe. Say goodbye with a salute and a promise to never let sentimentality stand in the way of good sense again.

Organizing your newly sorted wardrobe doesn’t have to feel like rocket science. I like to invest in some pretty hangers for the clothes that deserve display status. They’re like miniature trophies for your style wins, making your morning routine a whole lot smoother.

And for those small items that tend to create chaos, dividers are your silent heroes. They bring order to socks, scarves, and the ever-elusive accessory pile like no one ever could.

Bedside Drawers

Your bedside tables are those trusty companions that somehow morph into clutter magnets overnight! From random receipts to mystery cables, hair pins and random medications, it’s easy for these small spaces to become chaotic.

But now’s the time to reclaim your bedside sanctuary with a simple strategy: essentials vs. clutter.

Essentials to Keep:

  • A good book (or your e-reader) for those cozy night reads.
  • A bedside lamp for soft lighting.
  • A small notepad and pen for midnight ideas.
  • Your phone charger (but let’s keep it tangle-free).

What to Remove:

  • Outdated magazines and loose papers.
  • Excessive jewelry or accessories.
  • Random gadgets you haven’t used in ages.
  • Snack wrappers that sneaked in during late-night cravings.

Bedroom Dresser / Chest of Drawers

It’s all too common for bedroom dressers to become a haven for non-clothes items, from unread letters to scattered coins Ias I type, I realise I ditched some Euro coins on my bedroom dresser after my last trip home to Ireland…).

This clutter can make the dresser top feel more like a catch-all than a place of beauty and order. But don’t worry, there’s a simple solution to reclaim this space.

First, let’s tap into the potential of dresser drawers. Assign a purpose to each drawer, dedicating them to accessories, PJs, sports gear, or even seasonal items like hats and gloves. This kind of categorisation makes sure that everything has a designated home, making it easier to maintain organisation.

For the top of the dresser, consider investing in decorative trays or stylish boxes. These act as designated zones for those rogue items, providing structure while adding a pop of personality to your room. This way, you can keep daily essentials organised and within reach, while non-essential clutter stays tucked away.

Under the Bed

The space under the bed is the perfect example of the “out-of-sight, out-of-mind” storage trap. It’s so tempting to shove things under there and forget about them, isn’t it? Are you nodding right now??

But with a little bit of planning, this space can be a goldmine for smart storage solutions. Think of it as another drawer, ready to hold items that need a home but don’t require everyday access.

To truly utilise this area, invest in storage bins or vacuum bags. Clear bins give you a visual of what’s stored, making retrieval a breeze, while vacuum bags compress items, creating more space for other belongings.

Imagine sliding out a bin labelled “winter jumpers” or easily lifting a vacuum-packed bag filled with spare duvets. This approach not only maximises the use of floor space but also keeps everything dust-free and neatly tucked away.

No more tripping over stray shoes or hunting for that missing blanket!

Floors and Flat Surfaces

It’s all too easy to fall into the habit of tossing dirty clothes or shoes onto the floor, especially after a long day. But, I’m sure you know that this can quickly turn your room into a chaotic mess, making it difficult to keep surfaces clean and clear.

Instead of creating a pile, consider placing a laundry hamper within easy reach. This means you can drop clothes where they belong right away, leaving your floors clear and tidy.

Make it a habit to do a quick tidy-up every few days, gathering any stray items and putting them back where they belong. This way, you’ll ensure your floors remain a clutter-free space.

Ensuite Bathroom

If you’ve got a bathroom attached to your bedroom, that’s great! But, when it comes to bathroom clutter, there are some usual suspects that we could all do without.

Think of that colony of expired toiletries lurking at the back of your cabinet, alongside those mysterious half-used products you swore you’d finish, someday. It’s time for a little showdown.

You can follow my article on How To Declutter Makeup & Beauty Products for a more detailed guide on ditching the bathroom clutter.

Once your bathroom is stripped of these mischief-makers, it’s time to get creative with storage solutions.

Consider using caddies to corral your daily essentials into manageable clusters. Trust me, your future self will thank you every time you waltz into your pristine bathroom, knowing exactly where everything is.

Maintaining a Clutter-Free Bedroom

I always say that decluttering is the easy part. Keeping the clutter at bay in your bedroom is the hard part.

The key is consistency, turning these small tasks into part of your routine so they become almost second nature. Here are some super handy tips to help you maintain a clean and inviting bedroom without feeling overwhelmed:

  • Make Your Bed Every Morning: It sets the tone for the day and instantly makes the room look tidier.
  • Sort Laundry Daily: Have a laundry basket for dirty laundry and a dedicated spot for clothes you plan to wear again (preferably an empty drawer so they’re out of sight). This prevents them from ending up on the floor or thrown over furniture. Put away clean clothes as soon as the laundry is dry, don’t leave it sitting on ‘the chair’ (you know the one).
  • Adopt the One-Minute Rule: If a task takes less than one minute, like hanging up a coat or wiping a surface, do it immediately instead of postponing it.
  • Limit Nightstand Clutter: Keep only the essentials on your bedside table. Limit it to a book, a lamp, and perhaps one decorative item.
  • Designate a “Catch-All” Basket: Keep a small basket for stray items that can be relocated to their rightful place at the end of each day.
  • Regularly Empty Bins: Take out the trash regularly, even if it’s not full. A fresh start is key to a fresh-feeling room.

The Magical Benefits of a Weekly Tidy-Up Routine

A weekly tidy-up routine will be a game changer for maintaining a clutter-free bedroom. Set aside some time, preferably on the weekend, to tackle these tasks and see how it transforms your living space:

  • Dust and Vacuum: Give all surfaces (including those hard-to-reach areas) a good dusting and vacuum the floors.
  • Declutter Surfaces: Use this opportunity to put away any items that may have accumulated on surfaces throughout the week.
  • Organize Closet/Drawers: Take some time to organize your clothes and get rid of any items you no longer wear or need. This will not only declutter your space but also make it easier to find what you’re looking for in the future.
  • Change Bedding: Fresh sheets and pillowcases can make all the difference in creating a comfortable and inviting bedroom.
  • Clean Mirrors and Windows: Don’t neglect these surfaces, as they can easily accumulate dust and fingerprints.
  • Wipe Down Surfaces: Use a damp cloth to wipe down nightstands, dressers, and any other surfaces that may need some attention.
  • Empty “Catch-All” Basket: Take a few minutes to put away items from your catch-all basket and declutter for the week ahead.

Visual Reminders to Keep the Momentum Going

  • Using visual reminders is an excellent way to maintain your tidy-up momentum and keep your space clutter-free. Here are a few suggestions to keep you on track:
  • Sticky Notes with Motivational Quotes: Place sticky notes with uplifting messages around your home to inspire you to keep your space neat and tidy. Here’s one I love:
  • “Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” – Albert Einstein
  • Color-Coded Calendar: Use a brightly colored calendar to schedule regular cleaning sessions. Mark off completed sessions with a shiny sticker for added satisfaction.
  • Before and After Photos: Snap a quick photo of your area before and after tidying up. The visual transformation can be incredibly motivating and encourage you to maintain the order.
  • Chore Chart for the Household: Create a fun chore chart with each family member’s responsibilities. Use different colors or markers to make it engaging and enjoyable for everyone.
  • Vision Board of a Dream Home: Assemble a vision board highlighting your ideal tidy space. Hang it where you can see it daily to remind yourself of your organisational goals.

Conclusion

So, there you have it. Maintaining a decluttered bedroom not only creates a more pleasant and inviting space but also contributes to your overall mental health and helps to give you a good night’s sleep.

By implementing simple habits like cleaning surfaces, organising belongings, and using visual reminders, you can transform your room into a serene oasis free from chaos.

Remember, the goal is to create a space where you can relax and recharge, making these small efforts well worth it. Here’s to keeping your bedroom clutter-free from now on.
