Having an evening cleaning routine can make a huge difference in maintaining a tidy and stress-free home. And it also frees up your mornings.
Just like preparing a healthy dinner or getting ready for bed, incorporating some simple cleaning tasks into our nightly routine helps create a calming environment that’s perfect for relaxation and promotes a good night’s sleep.
As we all have a busy schedule, it can be challenging to find any free time or the energy to tackle chores at the end of the day. However, breaking them down into manageable tasks makes the to-do list a little less overwhelming and easier to stay on top of things.
Let me share with you my evening cleaning routine and how you can create one that suits your lifestyle.

Key Aspects of an Evening Cleaning Routine
My nightly cleaning routine has become an essential part of my overall daily routine. By tackling daily cleaning tasks, I’ve found that it keeps my apartment organised and it means I don’t have to spend hours having to clean at the weekend (which is a win for me!).
I tend to focus on high-traffic areas first. By doing so, it means I can keep these common areas tidy and free from dirt, especially since they accumulate the most mess throughout the day.
These high-traffic areas include the living room, kitchen, and bathroom.
This evening cleaning routine is the secret weapon that’s freed up some time for my daily morning cleaning sessions and my overall weekly cleaning routine, as I no longer need to spend ages scrubbing every inch of my home then.
It doesn’t involve any deep cleaning, just a little bit of cleaning and tidying to keep your messy house not so messy.Â
It’s worth noting that I’m not always in the mood to stick to my nighttime cleaning routine, but even if you can do this 3 or 4 times throughout the week, I guarantee it’ll help with your overall weekly cleaning schedule. I’m not exactly a night owl (or an early bird for that matter), but doing this cleaning at night is a great way to lessen the load the next morning.
Here’s where I start…
Are you ready to simplify your life?
Kitchen Cleaning
My evening cleaning routine begins with tackling the messy kitchen. I try to focus on keeping my kitchen clean and tidy and I’ve had success by breaking down the tasks into simple steps.
Dishes
The first thing I deal with is the dishes. I rinse and load any dirty dishes into the dishwasher or wash dishes by hand if there aren’t too many.
I don’t hang around for them to dry, but rather incorporate putting the dishes away into my morning cleaning routine.
Sorting out the dishes at night not only keeps the kitchen looking tidier, but it also prevents pesky smells and bacteria build-up in the sink.
Sink
Speaking of the sink, I clean it regularly. Using a gentle scouring pad, I quickly scrub the sink and rinse it with warm water. This gets rid of any crumbs and keeps the kitchen sink looking fresh.
On top of that, I occasionally run some hot water and a bit of vinegar down the drain to keep it clear and smelling fresh.
Kitchen counter
Next up, I clear any clutter from the kitchen counters and give a quick wipe down of the surfaces using a disinfectant spray so any germs or bacteria that may be lurking around don’t have a chance!
I also wipe down the hob, removing any grease or spills from the day. If anything has burnt on, a quick use of baking soda and warm water usually does the trick to remove it.
The microwave
Last up, I wipe away any food splatters and stains from the walls of the microwave.
As you can see, a tidy and clean kitchen is an important part of my evening cleaning routine. By maintaining this daily – or at least 3-4 times a week – I’m able to relax and enjoy a clutter-free kitchen space more often.
Living Room Organisation
Another part of my evening cleaning routine is to quickly organise my living space.
First, I tackle anything that has accumulated throughout the day. I sort through them, returning books to their designated shelves, putting electronics back in their storage spaces, and disposing of anything that needs to go in the bin.
Once the clutter is cleared, I switch on my favourite gadget – my robot vacuum (who I named Suki!). It takes barely any effort from me but leaves the floors dust free and clean for the next day.
While Suki is dealing with the floors, I straighten out and fluff any pillows on the sofas and chairs, and fold up any blankets that were used during the day so they’re ready for use again later.
And lastly, I throw the remote controls and any loose items that may have been left around during the day into a little bowl I keep on the coffee table to keep them all tidy and in their right place,
Bedroom Tidying
I always devote some time to tidy up my bedroom as having a tidy and clean space in the bedroom is proven to help with better sleep.
Firstly, I start with any dirty laundry. I gather any clothes or towels lying around and put them in my laundry hamper. Part of my morning routine includes putting on a load of laundry so this way, it’ll be ready. Sometimes, I even go one step further and put the clothes in the washing machine at night, ready for the morning.Â
Next up, I put away any clothes that have been left on ‘the chair’ (you know the one). If I don’t do this, I have a hard time keeping the pile under control throughout the week.
And the last thing I do in the bedroom is that I take a small microfiber cloth and wipe down the surfaces in my bedroom. This includes the bedside table, dressing table, and windowsill. This helps create a cleaner and more refreshing environment to sleep in.
Bathroom Cleaning
The last area I deal with each night is the bathroom – just the essential tasks.
First, I’ll put any lotions and potions back in their proper place so they’re not cluttering the counter. Then I’ll wipe down the counter and give it a little scrub if anything has spilled on it.
Next up, I’ll sweep up the mountains of hair that accumulate on the bathroom floor every day. I’m sometimes surprised I have any hair left on my head as there’s so much on the floor!
And lastly, I’ll use a cleaning spray to wipe down the bath and shower area so it’s ready to be used in the morning.Â
