The feeling of being lost in life
Feeling lost or confused about our life’s direction isn’t a great feeling. It’s unsettling and even scary at times not knowing what the future holds.
Often it feels as though you’re just going through the motions each and every day, nothing changes, nothing challenges you, and you’re unsure what your purpose is.
It’s not uncommon to have these feelings though. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that everyone at some stage or other has felt lost in life. So you’re not alone.
It can happen when a friend or colleague has a major success in life – maybe they’ve just gotten a promotion, or had a baby, or bought their first house. You wonder if you should be doing the same at this stage of your life and it may seem as though everyone else has the answers that you don’t.
But finding direction in life isn’t the same for everyone. And it’s ok to feel lost at times – it’s all part of the life’s journey.
The importance of finding direction in life
While you don’t always have to have all the answers and know exactly where you’re going, it’s still important to have some sort of path laid out for your life, rather than aimless wandering.
You don’t want to wake up one morning in the late stages of life and realise you’ve not done all the things you wanted to do, do you?
Having a clear direction in life will help you to:
- Find clarity
- Define success
- Overcome obstacles
- Stay motivated
- Increase happiness
- Lead to personal growth
All of these things are key components to living your best life and knowing your purpose.
13 Ways to find direction in life
1. Understand Yourself
Do you truly understand who you are? What makes you unique, your strengths, your weaknesses?
Often, we lose sight of who we are, so take some time to write down all of your likes, dislikes, values, preferences, strengths, weaknesses, interests and personality traits on a piece of paper.
Hang this somewhere where you’ll see it every day – maybe your fridge, the bathroom mirror, or on the inside of your front door – to remind yourself of everything you stand for.
When you have a better understanding of who you are, you’ll be on the right track to finding direction in life and it’ll be much easier for you to figure out what you want out of life.
2. Set Realistic Goals
Do you ever think about what you want to achieve in life? These are goals. They’re a road map for us to follow in life. They help us to stay motivated and they give us something important to focus on.
Write all your goals down so you have a tangible thing to look at to remind yourself what you’re working towards. Or tell a friend or family member. They can hold you accountable for achieving your goals in the future.
Setting goals plays a really important role in finding your path in life – whether it’s a career goal, a health goal, or a personal development goal.
The key to setting realistic goals is to make sure sure they’re SMART:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Relevant
- Time-based
By setting SMART goals you can realistically track your progress, celebrate your wins and change things up along the way, if necessary.
Be mindful that setting goals isn’t just about achieving them: it’s also about the journey, the lessons learned and the personal growth that comes with it.
3. Take Action
You’ve set your goals, so now what?
Sitting around and waiting for goals to be achieved isn’t going to get you anywhere fast. So, if you want to find direction in life, you’ve got to take action.
This doesn’t mean that you have to jump head first making life-changing decisions. You should start by spending a short time each day working towards your goals. And, if needs be, reach out to someone else that can help you on this journey.
Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone when you begin to take action!
4. Simplify Your Life
We’re constantly busy these days, and our homes are cluttered with unnecessary things, noise and distractions.
If you can make the time simplify your life, you’ll have a clearer path to finding your sense of direction. Declutter, switch off social media and limit the distractions that lead to you feeling overwhelmed.
What’s most important to you?
When you identify areas where you can simplify your life and make changes, you can begin to focus on what drives you.
By simplifying your life, you can make more room for the things that truly matter, and start to find the right direction for you.

5. Expand Your Horizons
Doing the same thing each and every day can get very boring, very quickly. Not only that, but it also keeps us standing still somewhat, and it doesn’t allow for growth.
One of the best ways to find your life direction is to expand your horizons. This means trying something new, meeting new people, and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.
When you expand your horizons, it can help you to discover new passions and interests, as well as providing an opportunity to connect with others and learn valuable life lessons.
Whether it’s travelling to a new country, taking up a new hobby or attending a workshop you’ve been interested in trying, stepping outside of your comfort zone can open up a whole new world of possibilities that leads to you finding your true direction in life.
6. Seek Guidance
Nobody has all the answers. That’s for sure. And if you’re unsure what your next step should be, it’s ok to ask someone else for their advice.
When we’re stuck in our ways, it’s almost as if we get tunnel vision and can’t see outside of the box. But by asking a family member, a mentor, a colleague or even a life coach, we open up the possibility to a fresh perspective or a different point of view.
7. Practice Mindfulness
Being present in the moment, focusing on your thoughts and feelings and letting go of distractions – this is what mindfulness is all about.
By practicing mindfulness each day, you can develop a deeper understanding of yourself, which in turn can help you figure out what you truly want in life.
Mindfulness is also a great way to help reduce stress, adopt self-compassion and cultivate a sense of gratitude – all of which are important when it comes to discovering your life direction.
8. Embrace Failure
Nobody is perfect and failure is a huge part of life. It’s something that can’t be avoided but there’s no need to fear it.
In fact, failure can be a stepping stone for future success. We can learn from it, grow from it, and develop new insights that eventually leads to success.
Past failures can show us what does and doesn’t work, what to avoid in the future and how we can improve.
Know that every single successful person has failed at some point and it’s what we choose to do with that failure that matters.
9. Reassess Your Path
If you find yourself unsure of what direction to take in life, it might be time to reassess your path.
Take some time to look at the choices you’ve made so far, and see if they’re still where you want to be today. If not, it might be time to start making adjustments.
Think about what you really want out of life. If your goals and aspirations have changed, it might be time to change direction. Maybe your career isn’t fulfilling you any longer, or you might not be spending your time on things that really matter.
Don’t ever feel guilty or ashamed for changing your course – life’s too short to be stuck doing something that doesn’t bring you joy and it’s never too late to find your sense of meaning.
10. Cultivate Resilience
Being resilient means that you can keep going, even when things get tough. It’s about being able to change and do better, no matter what happens.
Resilient people tend to have a better chance of getting through difficult times and coming out stronger on the other side.
Developing resilience takes time, effort and practice, but it’s a trait that can be developed and it’s an important quality to have when finding direction in life.
11. Let go of the Past
Your dream life has no room for the past. We’ve all got baggage that we carry with us, but we can’t change the past. We can, however, learn from it and use those life lessons to shape our future.
Don’t let past failures or disappointments prevent you from creating the life you want. And don’t waste time and energy on what-if scenarios and regret – instead, focus on making positive changes and creating a better future for yourself.
By letting go of the past, you can open yourself up to new possibilities that will help guide you in the right direction.
12. Take Care of Yourself
You are your most valuable resource and you can’t think clearly when you’re not in your best health.
Taking care of your physical, emotional and mental health is the foundation upon which everything else is built. Eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, stay connected with friends and family and take time to practice self-care.
When you prioritise your health, you give yourself the energy and clarity needed to tackle life’s little and big challenges. Don’t underestimate the power of self-care in helping you find your way.
13. Celebrate Successes
Even if you haven’t quite figured out your direction in life, you can still take pride and joy in the accomplishments you’ve made so far in life.
Celebrating our accomplishments not only boosts our self-confidence, but also serves as a reminder that we have the ability to achieve our goals in life. We need to acknowledge our efforts and hard work and embrace the feelings of pride and happiness that comes with it.
Celebrating successes in our everyday life can also provide the motivation we need to keep pushing forward towards achieving our dreams. Every win should be celebrated, no matter how insignificant they may seem.
