Irrespective of where you are in life, setting intentions is always a good idea. It can help to focus your thoughts and energy on what you want to achieve, and increase the chances of success by creating a roadmap to follow.

Intentions can be anything from wanting to get fit this year, to finally cleaning out the garage. But how do you set effective intentions?

For the past few years, I’ve been using a very specific method for setting intentions that has worked extremely well for me and my personal growth. I’m going to share my guide to setting intentions with you in the hope that it will help you achieve your goals as well.

But before I share my guide to setting intentions, let’s look at what intentions actually are.

What are intentions, and why should you set them?

An intention is a goal that you set for yourself, and it can be helpful to think of it as a roadmap for your life.

But unlike a traditional goal, which is often focused on tangible outcomes, an intention is more about the underlying motivation or purpose. For example, rather than setting a goal to “lose 10 pounds,” you might set the intention to “eat more healthily.” By focusing on the intention, you are more likely to maintain your motivation even when the going gets tough.

There are all sorts of intentions you can set for yourself, from the mundane (like intending to do the laundry) to the life-changing (like intending to find a more fulfilling career).

But why bother setting intentions at all? There are several good reasons.

First of all, intentions help to focus your thoughts and energy. When you have a clear goal in mind, it’s easier to take the necessary steps to achieve it.

Secondly, intentions can help to create a sense of direction in your life. If you know what you want to achieve, you’re more likely to make progress towards your goals.

Finally, setting intentions helps to manifest your desires into reality. By focusing your thoughts on what you want to achieve, you increase the chances of achieving it.

7 Step guide to setting intentions

Now that we’ve covered the basics, it’s time to learn how to set effective intentions. The following steps will help you create an intention that is both meaningful and achievable:

1. Choose the right intention

The first step in setting an intention is to choose the right one. This may seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually not as difficult as it seems.

There are two things you need to consider when choosing an intention

  • The first is what you want to achieve
  • The second is what you are willing to do to achieve it

The key is to find an intention that resonates with you on both levels. It should be something that you want, but that you’re also willing to work for.

2. Write it down

Once you’ve chosen your intention, it’s important to write it down. This will help you to focus on your goal, and keep it in mind as you work towards it.

There are many ways to write your intention, but I find the following format works best.

“I intend to _____ in order to _____.”

For example, “I intend to eat more healthily in order to feel healthier and more energetic.”

This simple act of writing down your intentions helps to solidify them and brings them into reality. Once you have your intention written down, place it somewhere where you will see it often. This could be on your bathroom mirror, in your wallet, or on your computer screen.

Each time you see it, take a moment to visualize yourself achieving your goal. What does it feel like? What does success look like? The more vivid and realistic you can make this image, the better.

3. Make it specific

When it comes to setting intentions, specificity is key. The more specific your intention is, the easier it will be to achieve.

For example, rather than setting an intention to “be happy,” try setting an intention to “smile more often.” Not only is this specific enough to be achievable, but it’s also something that you can measure. You’ll know that you’ve achieved your intention when you start smiling more often.

Similarly, rather than setting an intention to “lose weight,” try setting an intention to “eat three healthy meals a day.” This way, you’ll have a clear plan of action that you can follow. Remember, the more specific your intention is, the more likely you are to achieve it.

4. Set a deadline

If you really want to up your game, there’s one simple trick that can make all the difference: setting a deadline. When you give yourself a date by which you want to achieve your goal, it becomes much more real and tangible.

Suddenly, you’re not just dreaming about what you want to accomplish; you’re making a concrete plan to make it happen. And as anyone who’s ever tackled a difficult project knows, Having a deadline is often the key to getting things done.

Without a deadline, it’s all too easy to put off taking action until “someday.” And we all know what “someday” means: it means never. There’s no need to make things harder than they need to be; just pick a date and mark it in your calendar. Then, start working towards your goal.

Setting a deadline can help you to focus on what is important and let go of distractions. It can also help you to celebrate your success once you reach your goal.

5. Make it positive

If you’re like most people, you probably have a pretty good handle on setting negative intentions. You know, things like “I’ll never smoke again” or “I’ll never eat another donut.”

And while there’s nothing wrong with having negative intentions per se, they often backfire because they focus on what you don’t want rather than what you do want.

A better approach is to set positive intentions. In other words, rather than vowing to never eat another donut, you might set the intention to eat more healthy foods. Or instead of promising to never smoke again, you might set the intention to live a long and healthy life.

The key is to focus on what you want, not what you don’t want. And when it comes to setting goals, positive thoughts always work better than negative ones.

6. Take action

You’ve got your intentions. You’ve written them down, and you’ve said them out loud. You’ve put them in a place where you’ll see them every day. Now it’s time to take action!

This doesn’t mean that you need to have everything figured out – in fact, it’s often when we’re taking action towards our intentions that we have the biggest lightbulb moments and get clarity on what we really want.

But even small steps will help to move you closer to your goals and make them feel more real.

So, if your intention is to write a book, start by writing a few pages each day. If your intention is to be more present in your relationships, start by putting away your phone when you’re with other people. And if your intention is to get fit and healthy, book that yoga class! Every little bit counts, and as you take more and more steps towards your goal, you’ll start to see real progress.

7. Be Patient

Whether you’re looking to manifest more abundance, attract a romantic partner, or simply become more mindful and present in your everyday life, the process of setting intentions is a powerful tool that can help you achieve your goals.

But as with anything worth doing, the process of setting goals takes time, effort, and most importantly, patience.

One of the most common mistakes people make when trying to manifest their desires is that they try to force things to happen too quickly. They want instant results, and when they don’t see them immediately, they get discouraged and give up.

But the truth is that manifestation takes time. It’s not something that happens overnight; it’s a gradual process that unfolds over months and sometimes even years

When you set intentions, remember to be patient and keep going even when the process seems slow. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your dreams won’t come true overnight either. Trust the process, and know that with time and patience, you will achieve your goals.

The power of visualization

When it comes to setting intentions, the power of visualization should not be underestimated. Visualizing your desired outcome is a powerful way to focus your mind and connect with your intention.

And it’s not just wishful thinking – visualization can actually help to create the reality you desire. So how does it work?

When you visualize something, your brain starts to work on making it happen. It begins to look for opportunities and ways to make your vision a reality.

The more you focus on what you want, the more likely it is that you will achieve it. So if you want to make something happen in your life, start by spending some time visualizing it. See it in your mind’s eye as if it’s already happened. Feel the emotions that come with it. And most importantly, be patient and trust the process.

It may take time, but if you stay focused and keep visualizing your desired outcome, you will achieve it.

Tips for following through on your intentions

No matter how well intentioned you are, it can be hard to follow through on your good intentions. Life gets in the way, and before you know it, your best intentions have fallen by the wayside.

However, there are a few simple tips that can help you to stick to your plans and achieve your goals.

  • Start small: Trying to overhaul your entire life overnight is bound to lead to frustration and burnout. Instead, focus on making one small change at a time.
  • Be realistic: it’s essential to be realistic in your expectations. If you set yourself up for failure by setting unrealistic goals, you’ll only end up feeling disappointed and discouraged.
  • Ask for help: don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or professional therapist, there is no shame in admitting that you need help reaching your goals.
