Minimalism and Simple Living

I didn’t always practice minimalism and simple living. I was once a shopaholic, with over $30,000 credit card debt. I had a house full of shoes and clothes and just a lot of ‘stuff’ in general.

At some point a few years ago, I realised I wasn’t happy. I was stressed and anxious. My life wasn’t really turning out the way I thought it would. After much deliberation, I came to the conclusion that what I thought was making me happy – the late night online shopping sprees, trying on a new pair of shoes, getting the newest and best gadget on the market – wasn’t making me happy.

Is any of this sounding familiar?

I came across The Minimalists – Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus and over the next few months I followed their teachings, watched all their videos and interviews and listened to their podcasts. And something clicked.

I finally realised that I needed to make big changes. More than that, I realised I actually wanted to make these changes.

I started with decluttering my house of things that no longer added value, things I no longer loved and things that I didn’t need anymore, and I began organizing everything in such a way that every item had a home.

I stopped buying things that I didn’t need, things that didn’t bring value to my life.

Once I had simplified my home, three things happened:

  • My anxiety and stress levels went waaaay down, I was sleeping better and I was just a nicer person all around (feedback from actual people I know!)
  • I found more time for things I loved and the people I care about
  • I spent less time cleaning and tidying my house and more time enjoying living in my house

Win, win, win!
